Response of the chydorid faunas to rapid climatic changes in four alpine lakes at different altitudes

چکیده

The subfossil assemblages of Chydoridae from Late Glacial/Preboreal sediments of four sites from 603 m to 2290 m asl were analysed to trace the community response to rapid climatic warming that occurred at this period of time. In each site, distinct signals at the Younger Dryas/Preboreal boundary were recorded by density of remains, species diversity or community composition. However, responses varied considerably among the sites. This variation was attributed to the situation that the chydorid community structure is determined not only by temporal (Younger Dryas/Preboreal boundary) and spatial (among the sites) temperature gradients, but also by the specific local ecological conditions at the sites. In some species the classification with respect to cold tolerance should be reconsidered. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Phosphorus decrease and climate variability: mediators of synchrony in phytoplankton changes among European peri-alpine lakes

1. In an attempt to discern long-term regional patterns in phytoplankton community composition we analysed data from five deep peri-alpine lake basins that have been included in long-term monitoring programmes since the beginning of the 1970s. Local management measures have led to synchronous declines in phosphorus concentrations by more than 50% in all four lakes. Their trophic state now range...

Cultivation of Angelica archangelica Linn.: evaluation for economical viability at two different climatic conditions

Cultivation of an important sub alpine-alpine medicinal and aromatic herb, Angelica archangelica Linn. (Apiaceae), was carried out at two different climatic zone at 2200 m asl (Pothivasa, PV) and 3600 m asl (Tungnath, TN) altitudes in Garhwal, North west Himalaya, India. These altitudes represent temperate and alpine region of the Himalaya. Since the species has a very few wild populations, cul...

Recovery of sequences and extent of ancient lake in Jazmourian Playa based on lake terraces in Quaternary

Extended abstract 1-Introduction The natural environment is affected by climate, and its changes have different geomorphic forms. The dominance of different climatic phases and changes in the balance of matter and energy cause different shaping systems in the environment. Ancient lakes are one of the geomorphic forms of the Quaternary period, and today many of these lakes are either complete...

The role of solar UV radiation in the ecology of alpine lakes.

Solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR, 290-400 nm) is a crucial environmental factor in alpine lakes because of the natural increase of the UVR flux with elevation and the high water transparency of these ecosystems. The ecological importance of UVR, however, has only recently been recognized. This review, examines the general features of alpine lakes regarding UVR, summarizes what is known about th...

The effect of environmental factors on the location of ancient sites around the ancient northern lakes of the desert plain (Holocene)

Introduction Site selection of human habitats in pre-historic times, unlike the current periods, has been strongly influenced by natural factors. Studies may be focused on three areas including paleoclimate, paleogeomorphology and archeology in order to identify environmental factors affecting primary habitats. Based on studies, most of the ancient lakes in central Iran were formed during the Q...
